Hawaiian Dance Wellington consists of a group of women ages 28-78, who enjoy dancing hula to beautiful Hawaiian music. They have been practicing weekly for two years now. The dancers follow the words of the mele (songs) with their hand motions; most of them describe the beautiful scenery in the Hawaiian islands: the lush green mountains, waterfalls, beaches and rainbows. Other dances are cheeky and naughty love songs.
All the dances are accompanied by recordings of beautiful Hawaiian music; strumming of ukuleles, slack key guitar and wonderful vocals. The group is led by Liora, who is originally from Mexico, but lived in Hawaii for 10 years, where she fell in love with the Hawaiian music and dance. Here she enjoys choreographing and sharing this love with this great group of women. The dancers come from Zimbabwe, Japan, France, England and New Zealand.
They practice weekly at Toi Poneke, and everybody is welcome to give it a try, men too!
